JB's Story
What I want to share with you next is something I’ve never shared with anyone before. I want you to know that this process really can work for anyone.
Even as a kid, I was bad with managing my day, really bad. I forgot my lunches and never remembered my homework.
As I got a little older, instead of getting better at managing my day I got worse! I was that one student that would wake up at 4 am before school to write an 8 page paper due that day.
Going into my senior year I procrastinated an entire summer on a project due at the start of the year and started off my semester with a grade of 17…you read that right, 17 out of 100.
In college, I actually forgot to take my LSAT for entry to law school – this after spending a lot of time and money on a preparatory course. I didn’t even realize I missed it for a full MONTH! I was a mess.
When I started my career it didn’t get much better. My first job in the financial services world was one mistake after another. I had little to no structure and my work and personal life suffered. Long story short it didn’t work out.
You have to understand, I didn’t want to be this way, I just was, and I didn’t know how to be any different. I had never learned how to manage my time and my day.
I committed to get better, and slowly, over a few years, I began to. I felt comfortable in my day – to – day work and life, but I wanted a promotion. That meant adding more responsibilities to my schedule, so I took a board position and began building out an internal mentorship program for my colleagues. As I got busier and busier my days became more and more of a blur. I still felt like I had it all under control. Until I didn’t.
I’ll never forget the day it came crashing down, because I made a HUGE mistake.
I invited an important external partner to tour our office from out of state. I promised to set up a meeting, I organized the date and the time with the partner and I figured I could work on all the details another day.
Except the date came, and I had forgotten. Yes, I had completely forgotten. Security wasn’t alerted. A conference room was not set up, nobody knew the external partner was visiting until the very moment they stepped through the door
Embarassed, was the least of it. Would I damage my reputation so badly I’d never get the promotion I had been working so hard for? What else had I forgotten? Would I lose my job? And, above all else, WHAT WAS I GOING TO DO!?
Thankfully I did not lose my job, but I realized something incredibly important. You see, we all feel like we can ‘juggle’ and maybe for a while you can. But what happens when you no longer can? What happens when all the balls, all the plates, all of the balancing falls apart around you? How bad will it get?
I learned that day, the importance of being taught how to manage my days and my time.
Here’s the great news, you don’t have to go through the years of awful feelings that I went through and you don’t have to dedicate more years of your life to figuring this all out because we’re going to tell you exactly what you need to know so you too can take back control of your day.
